Adolfo Pérez Esquivel joins the fast for debt cancellation

Today the Argentine Nobel Peace Prize, Adolfo Perez Esquivel joins in Buenos Aires debt fast started in Washington D.C by Jubilee USA demanding Congress to pass the Jubilee Act to cancel the debt claimed from the countries of the South.

From September 6th to October 15th personalities from all over the world will join a fast and prayer lead by Reverend David Duscombe in Washington DC, demanding Congress to pass the Jubilee Act for the cancellation of the debts claimed from the countries of the South.


In preparation for the Global Week of action against Debt and the International Financial Institutions, called by hundreds of movements and organization from all over the    world from October 14th to the 21st, various religious and political leaders will fast against the domination of the debt over impoverished peoples of the South. Among them will be: Njongonku Ndungane, Archbishop of South Africa and successor to Desmond Tutu; Dennis Brutus, well-known activist against the Apartheid y and ministers from various churches and Christian congregations.


In joining the Fast. Perez Esquivel said that "It is not just to pay an immoral debt which atempts against God and the life of our peoples. Instead of spending thousands of millions of dollars for the destruction, and death of peoples in wars and conflicts in various parts of the world, pay the exploited and impoverished peoples what is owed to them, because we are not debtors, but creditors!


 In Argentina, on the fast of  September 6th, resides Perez Esquivel, Minister Angel Furlan of the United Evangelical Lutheran Church (IELU), Gladys Jarazo and Pablo Herrero Garisto from Dialogo 2000 will join the fast.


Many communities from around the country have sent their support; Mothers of Plaza de Mayo Founding Line, sister Maria Bassa from the Ecumenical Group, Rina Bertaccini, joint president of  the Council for World Peace, and Beverly Keene, coordinator for Jubilee South/Americas, among others.


During the fast organizations from all over the country will be invited to join the Global Week of Action in October, with activities in their cities and regions.

The Global Week of Action against the Debt and International Financial Institutions is the response of  popular organizations and movements against the consequences of the debt, for the repudiation and cancellation of multilateral and illegitimate debts,  the promotion of integral audits of the debts and the IFIs, for transparency and citizen control in the cancellation processes, and an end to conditions and neoliberal policies, and the generation of autonomous and sovereign financing alternatives.
