Haiti was the first black and slave country to gain its independence, proclaiming in action the universality of human rights and initiating a stage of significant contributions to the battles for emancipation throughout the Americas. But, 202 years later, its people are still fighting for their sovereignty and their right to self-determination to be respected, and to attain decent living conditions for every man and woman of the country.
For the Haitian people, the last years have been strongly marked by the increase of misery and exclusion, and the subjugation of its territory, its state, its economy and all institutional processes. They also have been marked by a new military and economic intervention by the USA, France, Canada and other countries, leading to the forced removal of the previous government and the occupation of the country by a Civilian-Military Stabilization Mission (MINUSTAH), authorized by the UN Security Council, commanded by Chile and Brazil, and including the participation of military and police forces from more than 40 countries.
Today is the time to start paying off the historical debt owed to the Haitian people, supporting and helping them in their needs and demands. In this spirit, the Assembly of Social Movements that met during the VI World Social Policentric Forum, in Caracas, Venezuela, adopted the proposal presented by the Haitian Solidarity Tribunal, to realize a World Day of Solidarity with the People of Haiti, on March 29th, National Constitution Day. We call on all peoples, popular organizations and movements to make this Day a reality, carrying out actions that advance the central aims of the Solidarity Campaign that must then continue to strengthen throughout this year:
# The withdrawal of foreign military troops, whose presence is an affront to the Haitian people's right to sovereignty and self-determination.
# Unconditional and immediate cancellation of the external debt demanded from Haiti, an illegitimate debt whose servicing during 2005 constituted the most important expense in the National Budget of Haiti.
# Support and solidarity in matters of sanitation, education, environmental restoration, human rights and others, in correspondence with the rights, needs and proposals of the Haitian people.
Haiti reflects today a synthesis of the domination suffered by South peoples everywhere, and at the same time of their dignity and struggle to conquer their real independence. In Haiti the future of all our peoples is at stake; their struggle is our struggle.
FOR A FREE AND SOVEREIGN HAITI! END THE ECONOMIC AND MILITARY OCCUPATION NOW!
