ALAI's
Mission
is to develop and implement responses to the various
challenges presented by communication, as a strategic area for social
action. Since 1977, it has been developing an alternative
communications model that pursues a more democratic, widespread,
decentralized and multicultural communications fabric, evolving in
tune with social transformation processes.
Activity
Areas:
Sistematized
Information
, focusing mainly on socio-political dynamics within
Latin America, from the perspective of social and civic movements, as
well as contextualizing current events. It also contributes elements
of reflection on the challenges of the times, with the collaboration
and contributions of noted analysts, thinkers, organizations and
social leaders. In addition to this web site, ALAI
offers various resources and information services.
Organizational
Development and Networking
, orientated to stimulating the
exchange of experiences, knowledge and strategies among networks and
social organizations and to building their capacity to communicate
and participate on the international stage. With these organizations,
ALAI shares its knowhow and skills, and develops activities designed
to facilitate the circulation and exchange of information,
particularly over the Internet. In this spirit, in conjunction with
various social networks, the Web Community of Social Movements was
born, <http://www.movimientos.org>,
an initiative that pursues a stronger and more strategic intervention
of social movements within this medium.
The
promotion of the right to communicate
, which includes public
awareness activities, elaboration of proposals and advocacy in
decision-making spheres. A key focus is gender, as well as the
development of alternative networks. In this framework, ALAI pursues
agreements with similar initiatives.
Women's
Program
, dedicated to strengthening advances in
terms of organization and proposals of women's movements and
networks, through development of their communications processes. This
program promotes the advancement of women's right to communicate and
networking around the recognition of this right. Through ALAI’s
publications and the web site: <http://alainet.org/mujeres/>,
the women's program disseminates information presenting the diversity
of ideas and issues within the women’s and feminist movements
of the continent.
Regional
Programs,Due to their relevance and weight in present-day social
dynamics, ALAI pays particular attention, in all its work areas, to
human rights, rural movements, indigenous peoples and ethnic
minorities.
