The Latin American Information Agency - ALAI
The Latin American Information Agency (ALAI, for its Spanish acronym) is a communications organization committed to human rights, gender equality,
and citizen participation in the development and public affairs of Latin America. ALAI's work is dedicated to the democratization of communication as a basic condition of democratic life and social justice.
ALAI's mission is to address the myriad challenges that communications pose as a strategic component of social action.
Since 1977, ALAI has developed an alternative communication proposal with the aim of constructing a new communicative fabric:
one that is broad, democratic, decentralized, pluricultural and in tune with the processes of social transformation.
ALAI's main activities are to produce, process, and spread systematized information;
to contribute to capacity building in communication among people's organizations; and to promote the right to communicate.
ALAI's Women's Program develops specific communication initiatives with woman's organizations.
The Systematized Information program pays particular attention to the dynamics of socio-politics in Latin America,
emphasizing the perspective of social movements and citizen movements, as well as a contextualized reading of current events.
With the collaboration of prominent analysts, intellectuals, and social movement leaders, ALAI contributes an element of reflection on current issues and challenges.
In addition to this website, ALAI offers the alai-amlatina Bulletin, the monthly magazine America Latina en Movimiento (Latin American in Movement),
books, and audiovisual productions.
The Communications Capacity-building program supports Latin American social movements in strengthening their own communication mechanisms and strategies.
In collaboration with a variety of networks and social organizations,
ALAI participates in the Minga Informativa de Movimientos Sociales (http://www.movimientos.org - Social Movements' Information Pool), a coordinated initiative for the diffusion of information and a shared communications training program.
Included in ALAI's contribution are several studies on communication.
The Promotion of the Right to Communications program involves public awareness raising, formulating proposals, advocacy in regional and global decision-making spaces.
In this vein, ALAI gives priority to participation in campaigns and concerted initiatives.
ALAI's Women's Program
is dedicated to strengthening the organizational and advocacy capacity of women's movements and networks through the development of their communications processes.
ALAI promotes the advancement of women's communication rights, facilitates networking to make these rights viable, and training programs in communication for women in social organizations.
Through its publications and the web page: http://www.alainet.org/mujeres.php, ALAI presents a diversity of proposals and critical analyses from Latin American women's and feminist movements.
The Women's Program has edited various publications.
ALAI has special consultative status with the Economic and Social Commission (ECOSOC) of the United Nations.
It is a member of the International Council of the World Social Forum.
